Having lived in Sofia, I can tell you that it’s a city that leaves a lasting impression, offering something for every type of traveller.
Historical and Cultural Landmarks
1. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is Sofia’s most iconic landmark. This massive, gold-domed Orthodox church is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Inside, the cathedral is adorned with intricate mosaics, frescoes, and icons, creating a space of spiritual grandeur. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Sofia.
2. Vitosha Boulevard:
The city’s main shopping street, Vitosha Boulevard, is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants, this pedestrian street offers a taste of Sofia’s modern life. It’s a great place to enjoy a coffee while watching the world go by, or to shop for souvenirs and Bulgarian crafts.
3. Serdica Ruins
Sofia’s history dates back to the Roman Empire, and the Serdica Ruins are a testament to that. Located in the heart of the city, these ancient ruins are now part of the Serdika metro station, where visitors can explore remnants of a Roman-era city, including streets, houses, and a basilica. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Sofia’s past.
